Applied Mechanical Ventilation
Interested in a comprehensive, didactic, open-access, engaging review of mechanical ventilation that goes from building strong foundations to clearly explaining advanced topics? Designed for for Critical Care Medicine fellows, Critical Care APPs and motivated residents, this course is made of short (~5 min) videos, ideally to be completed once a week. The videos contain ventilator screenshots from real cases, giving it a bedside feel. Topics discussed can be found below the introduction video below:
• Ventilator breaths – learn trigger, limit and cycle variables, the foundation for the advanced concepts you will learn later in the course
• Modes – learn how each mode works, how to set each of its variables and how to choose an appropriate mode for your patient
• Respiratory system mechanics – truly understand key concepts such as plateau pressures and auto-peep and enjoy a deep dive into advanced mechanics, where we will discuss esophageal balloons and more
• ARDS: learn how to thoughtfully set tidal volumes (beyond a “6ml/kg of PBW for everyone”), advanced methods of PEEP titration, options in refractory hypoxia and more,
• Asthma/COPD: learn the principles of managing patients with increased airway resistance, and challenges such as how to balance treating auto-PEEP in patients with profound respiratory acidosis
• Dyssynchronies and other patient-ventilator interactions: learn how to analyze waveforms in a systematic approach, diagnose and treat abnormal patient ventilator interactions
